Description

Lecture I in Music Education for the 21st Century: Intersections of Music and Culture

Led by ethnomusicologist Bruno Nettl

Bruno Nettl was born in Prague, received his Ph.D. at Indiana University, and spent most of his career teaching at the University of Illinois, where he is now professor emeritus of music and anthropology.  His lecture concerns the ways in which traditional Native American songs are composed, taught, and learned, as well as the Native American concepts of music creation and learning.  Nettl will present songs for analysis and discuss the Northern Plains peoples’ ideas of how songs come into existence, drawing on his own experience with their culture – in particular, with the Blackfoot tribe of Montana.  Through this discussion, participants will gain a better understanding of the sound and structure of Native American music.  The lecture will conclude with a brief history of one song.

This event is free for all audiences!
