Recording Dub Technician
Base Wage: $8.25/hr. Work-study required.
Area: Concert Production
Supervisor: Technical Services Manager
Functions: Master and copy existing live recordings. Oversee distribution of copied recordings. Record and assist in providing sound reinforcement and lighting support to events in Bienen School of Music venues.
Hours: Expected to complete at least ten hours of work each week scheduled by the Technical Services Manager. Quarterly schedule arranged with the Technical Services Manager. Weekend and evening hours are necessary. Specific deadlines must be met.
Responsibilities
Public Contact:
- Some contact with faculty, staff, and public.
- Critical client contact.

Cleaning, Physical Labor, and Maintenance:
- Moving of A/V equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Cleaning and maintenance of A/V equipment.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Create professional quality master tapes by engineering and mastering recordings of concerts, recitals, and other events using technically advanced digital and analog equipment. Recordings done at Pick-Staiger, Regenstein, Lutkin, and other venues are used for archives, recording/CD production, and distribution to composers, performers, and conductors.
- Create packaging and labeling for duplicated recordings using Macintosh computers with Toast Titanium and “Disc Cover 2 RE,” and prepare recordings for purchase.
- Occasionally set up and operate professional quality sound reinforcement and intercom systems and components in conjunction with stage techs and stage crew.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair functions to technical inventory.
- Participate in staff training, orientation, and meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 100% reliability in adhering to a work schedule.
- Previous experience in live sound reinforcement or recording preferred.
- Previous experience using ProTools, Bias Peak, or WaveLab preferred.
- Accurate hearing across the audible range.
- High degree of manual dexterity.
- Interest in music production.
- Ability to work independently.
Stage Crew
Base Wage: $8.25/hr. Work-study required.
Area: Concert Production
Supervisor: Technical Services Manager
Functions: Serve as stage hand doing daily maintenance as well as providing stage set assistance to concerts in Bienen School of Music events.
Hours: Stage crew members are expected to fill daily maintenance shifts to keep the concert hall in order on days when there are no performances, and to assist in setup and teardown of stage equipment on performance days. The maintenance shift schedule is established at the beginning of the quarter, and special stage crew calls will be scheduled on an individual basis.
Dress: Stage crew may dress casually unless working on-stage at a concert. During concerts, all-black clothing (including non-ripped black jeans) is acceptable. For regular maintenance shifts, sturdy clothing (jeans, long-sleeved shirts, work boots) is suggested.

Cleaning, Physical Labor, and Maintenance
- Moving of A/V and stage equipment up to 75 pounds individually, and much more with help of other crew members.
- Cleaning and maintenance of concert hall equipment.
- Work on high catwalks.
- Piano moving.
- Sweep stage before and after events, occasionally emptying garbage.
- Maintaining concert hall equipment inventory.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Carry out stage changes, setups, and strikes involving equipment ranging from chairs and music stands to riders and sound reinforcement equipment.
- Represent Northwestern University, the Bienen School of Music, and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall by providing a high level of service to performing artists and rental clients.
- Load-in and load-out of equipment for concerts.
- Minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment throughout concert hall.
- Monitoring inventory of concert hall equipment, including stage equipment and sound and lighting equipment.
- Work independently to maintain cleanliness in the concert hall.
- Occasional clerical duties as assigned by the Technical Services Manager.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in theatre or concert hall work preferred.
- Stage hands should be comfortable working with hand and light power tools.
- Exhibit a neat and orderly appearance.
- Strong interest in being actively involved in presenting the arts to the public.
- Ability to work independently and with great initiative.
Stage Technician / Stage Manager
Base Wage: $8.25/hr. Work-study required.
Area: Concert Production
Supervisor: Technical Services Manager
Functions:
- Record and provide sound reinforcement and lighting support to events in Bienen School of Music venues.
- Act as Stage Manager for all events.
Hours: Adherence to the Technician schedule by employees is of the utmost importance in this position. Technicians are scheduled to cover concerts, recitals, and other events on a rotating basis. Typically this takes place on evenings and weekends during all of the weeks of an academic quarter, including reading and finals weeks. Scheduling takes place at weekly meetings according to preference, skill level, and seniority several weeks before an event. Staff availability schedules must be completed at the beginning of each academic quarter.
Dress: Stage crew may dress casually unless working on-stage at a concert. During concerts, all-black clothing (including non-ripped black jeans) is acceptable. Stage Managers must wear black slacks/skirt, a white dress shirt or blouse, and dress shoes. Stage techs working as front-of-house engineers must wear all black or they may dress like stage managers.

- Provide specialized sound reinforcement, audio recording, theatrical lighting, and production services in support of live concerts, recitals, and classes in five facilities.
- Supervise and carry out stage changes and ensure that the stage set-up meets the needs of the performers.
- Set up and operate professional quality sound reinforcement and intercom systems and components, as well as lighting equipment.
- Maintain order of backstage area. Control who enters the stage. Notify performers of time remaining until performance time.
- Assist and orient visiting technical staff and contractors in the delivery, set-up, operation, teardown, and loadout of technical equipment and services.
- Provide specialized sound reinforcement, audio recording, lighting, and production services in support of live concerts, recitals, and classes in five facilities.
- Occasionally work independently with a high consequence of error in live situations where there is no opportunity to repeat one's actions.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair functions to technical inventory.
- Check backstage area for misplaced items following performance.
- Participate in staff training, orientation, and meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
