Usher

Base Wage: $8.25/hr. Work-study required.

Area: Concert Production

Supervisor: Responsible to the Operations Manager. Training, task assignment, and day-to-day supervision will be conducted by the House Managers.

Functions: Serve as an usher for concerts in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall and other venues on campus.

Hours: The hours of employment for Ushers are in effect every week of the academic quarter including Reading and Finals Week. Hours are primarily in the evening and occasionally during the day on Saturday and Sundays. The total scheduled time will not exceed 15 hours a week. Availability schedules must be completed at the beginning of each academic quarter. Scheduling will occur two weeks in advance of the given dates in question. All special requests for time off will be considered on an individual basis. The schedule is posted each Monday and the opportunity for substituting is available.

Dress: Ushers should present themselves in a professional manner and should abide by the black and white dress code. Jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, sandals, and boots are not acceptable. A name tag will be worn at all times for the benefit of patrons and artists. People not meeting an acceptable level of appearance will be asked to change into something more appropriate.

Responsibilities

Monetary Responsibilities:
Occasional selling of merchandise and/or concessions.

Cleaning, Physical Labor, and Maintenance:

  1. Light cleanup of the concert hall before and after concerts.
  2. Piano moving.
  3. Moving stage equipment up to 50 pounds.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Represent Northwestern University, the Bienen School of Music, and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall by providing a high level of service to patrons.
  2. Help ensure the safety and security of up to 1,089 patrons.
  3. Distribute programs, receive tickets, and direct patrons to appropriate seats.
  4. Preserve quiet atmosphere in lobby during performances and monitor late seating of patrons.
  5. Occasional hosting of after-concert receptions.
  6. Stage manage student recitals in Regenstein Recital Hall.
  7. Check auditoriums for lost items following performances and secure recital halls after student recitals.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Experience in theater or concert hall work, either in performance or production.
  2. Pleasant, enthusiastic, service-oriented attitude is a necessity.
  3. Exhibit a neat and orderly appearance.
  4. Strong interest in being actively involved in presenting the arts to the public.
  5. Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a plus.

 

 

Lutkin Monitor

Wage: Base $8.35/hr. Work-study required.

Area: Concert Production

Supervisor: Directly responsible to the Lutkin Manager

Functions: Serves as Stage Manager to Bienen School of Music concerts, student recitals, and rental concerts in Lutkin Hall. Provides assistance and security in the building during rehearsals and classes.

Hours: The hours of employment are in effect every week of the academic quarter including Reading and Finals Week. Generally, hours are weekdays between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays between 8:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. Hours are often extended to accommodate performances. Other occasional hours may be determined later. Lutkin Monitors generally work one or two shifts per week, dependent upon their financial award. Scheduling of these shifts will occur at the beginning of each academic quarter. The shifts will remain constant for the length of one academic quarter, at which point they will be rotated. Substitutions are allowed if conflicts arise. The individual is responsible for finding an appropriate substitute and notifying the Lutkin Manager of the change. An appropriate substitute is a person who has been trained and approved to work in Lutkin Hall, i.e. another Lutkin Monitor.

Dress: When serving as Stage Manager for recitals it is expected that Lutkin Monitors will dress in a professional manner. Men should wear a suit or a sport coat with a tie and women should wear a suit, dress, or professional looking skirt and blouse. Jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, and boots are not acceptable. Each individual is responsible for maintaining clean and pressed clothing, as well as upkept shoes. A name tag will be worn at all times for the benefit of patrons and artists. People not meeting an acceptable level of appearance will be sent home to change into something more appropriate. Casual wear is acceptable during shifts with no public events.

  2. Oversee the safety of patrons and performing artists in Lutkin Hall and ensure the security of the building.
  3. As Stage Manger, work closely with performers to facilitate operational, technical, and hospitality requirements.
  4. Execute stage changes and ensure that the stage set-up meets the needs of the performers.
  5. Operate house and stage lighting at appropriate times during a performance.
  6. Maintain order of backstage area and control the entrances of performers onto the stage.
  7. Check auditoriums for lost items following performances.
  8. Secure recital hall and all equipment/instruments at closing time.
  9. Report maintenance, repair, security, or other problems to the Director.
  10. Fill out monitor report after every shift.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Punctuality and reliability is a must.
  2. Experience in theatre or concert hall work, either in performance or production.
  3. Pleasant, enthusiastic, service-oriented attitude is a necessity.
  4. Exhibit a neat and orderly appearance.

House Manager

Base Wage: $9.50/hr. Work-study required.

Area: Concert Production

Supervisor: Directly responsible to the Operations Manager.

Supervises: Ticket Office, Ushers, Stage Managers, Tech/Stage Crew, Evening Office Personnel

Functions: Coordinate all concert hall activities and operations in the absence of full-time staff.

Hours: The hours of employment for the House Manager position are in effect every week of the academic quarter, including Reading and Finals Week. Generally, shifts are scheduled during weekdays between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Hours are often extended to accommodate performances. Other occasional hours may be determined later. A House Manager typically works two shifts each week. Scheduling of these shifts occurs at a mandatory weekly meeting. The time of the meeting is determined at the start of each quarter. Substitutions are allowed if conflicts arise and will be considered on a weekly basis at the House Managers' meeting.

Dress: With the high degree of responsibility and authority that is associated with being a House Manager, it is expected that the individual will dress in a professional manner, especially when there is a performance scheduled. Men should wear a suit or a sport coat with a tie and women should wear a suit, dress, or professional looking skirt and blouse. Each individual is responsible for maintaining clean and pressed clothing, as well as upkept shoes. A name tag will be worn during performances for the benefit of patrons and artists.

Responsibilities

High level of contact with patrons, performers, faculty, and students.

Monetary Responsibilities:
Supervision of Box Office.

Cleaning, Physical Labor, and Maintenance:

  3. Moving of stage equipment up to 50 pounds.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Represent Northwestern University, the Bienen School of Music, and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall by providing a high level of service and/or supervision to patrons, staff, volunteers, outside contractors/vendors, and performing artists.
  2. Oversee and ensure the safety and security of up to 1,300 patrons, as well as staff, visiting performers, and facilities up to 40,000 square feet.
  3. Work autonomously by managing three concert halls in the absence of professional staff; make decisions with a very high consequence of error; interpret concert hall and school policy.
  4. Work closely and effectively communicate with university administrators, faculty, artists, artist managers, patrons, and staff.
  5. Directly supervise up to 15 student employees functioning as ushers, stage managers, recording engineers, and box office staff working simultaneously in up to 3 separate facilities.
  6. Work closely with artists and their staff to facilitate successful performances by coordinating hospitality, staging, technical, and operational requirements.
  7. Oversee building opening and lock-up.
  8. Coordinate Physical Plant and University Police services.
  9. Oversee cash handling procedures and recording components of performances.
  10. Train and illustrate duties of concert staff to new employees on a group and one-to-one basis.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Illustration of a strong service attitude and a willingness to deliver that service at all times.
  2. Ability to remain level-headed in a crisis situation.
  3. Knowledge of other jobs associated with presenting concerts at Pick-Staiger.
  4. Proven track record of leadership and fairness in dealing with student employees.
  5. Capacity to interpret concert hall policy and enforce regulations.
  6. Interest in presenting the arts to the public.
  7. Service as a Pick-Staiger employee for no less than 3 academic quarters.

 

 

Lutkin Manager

This position is achieved only through internal promotion after at least one year as a member of the Usher or Monitor staff.

Base Wage: $9.15/hr. Work-study required.

Area: Concert Operations

Supervisor: Directly responsible to the Operations Manager

Supervises: Lutkin Monitors, Ticket Office (when applicable to Lutkin), Ushers (when applicable to Lutkin), and Recording Technicians (when applicable to Lutkin)

Functions: Coordinate and supervise all Lutkin Hall Monitors and hall operations in the absence of full-time staff.

Hours: The hours of employment for the Lutkin Manager are in effect on an as-needed basis every week of the academic quarter including Reading and Finals Week. Generally, hours will take place within the following schedule: weekdays between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Hours are often extended to accommodate performances. Other occasional hours may be determined later. The Lutkin Manager typically works one (1) five-hour shift each week in addition to five floating hours, to be used where needed. Scheduling of the single shift occurs at the beginning of each academic quarter or as needed. The shift remains constant for the length of one academic quarter, at which point it is rotated. In addition to the standard shift hours, a mandatory one-hour Lutkin Monitor meeting will be directed by the Lutkin Manager and occurs monthly throughout the quarter. The time of the meeting is determined at the start of each quarter. Substitutions for shifts are allowed if conflicts arise and will be considered on an as-needed basis at the Lutkin Monitor meeting.

  3. Work autonomously by managing Lutkin Hall in the absence of professional staff; make decisions with a very high consequence of error; interpret concert hall and school policy.
  4. Work closely and effectively communicate with university administrators, faculty, artists, artist managers, patrons, and staff.
  5. Directly supervise student employees functioning as Lutkin Monitors and ushers, recording engineers, and box office staff on an as needed basis.
  6. Work closely with artists and their staff to facilitate successful performances by coordinating hospitality, staging, technical, and operational requirements.
